You’ve been thinking about it for days; you’ve composed the perfect words and then suddenly you feel small.
Unheard.
Within a micro second, they’re defensive or shut down or worse - minimise what you’re saying.

And on the surface it can feel like they don’t care. And maybe there are times when it is that. But more often than not I witness that shut down because they have quite literally shut down.

There’s overwhelm. A difficulty in handling the emotions that are coming their way.

Sometimes it’s a panic to find the language that fits what’s happening in that moment.

But very rarely is it experienced this way by you. You feel rejected and wonder why you’ve bothered.

Sometimes you might push harder. Pursue for a sign that there’s care or understanding. But instead of pushing harder - pause.

Saying something like “I can see this feels hard to talk about. Can we come back to it when we both feel calmer?” creates safety and collaboration.

And it’s more than tempting to retreat and not try again, but each time you try this and co-create an environment for those conversations to happen - your body remembers.

16 years ago today I birthed my first baby; what I didn’t know is that a new version of me would be birthed at the same time.

I have laid here thinking about what I want to write or all the things I could share but actually those thoughts have come and gone.

What I want to say is how proud I am to have had any part in this wonderful human’s life. Motherhood has truly turned me inside out.

That saying about forever having your heart wandering outside of your body has never felt truer.

I notice the tension of these teenage years and letting go, whilst desperately wanting to hold on. And whilst one kind of distance is growing, a different type of closeness is emerging.

He still reaches out to me when I walk past him and bends down to cuddle me as he towers over me these days. He has time to spend with his younger siblings and he stays that little bit longer to chat.

And yes there’s distance to navigate. But I’m proud of how I’m working through those opposing forces. It’s necessary and it’s healthy.
They don’t belong to us after all.

Feeling so grateful ❤️

Silence can be powerful - it can also be excruciating.

Honestly, I am genuinely well seasoned in silence in my sessions - I have experienced a lot of them 😅 But it can be utterly painful when I witness you make a bid for connection with your partner and you’re met with silence.

It can be interpreted in so many ways - but mostly it’s common to make it mean something negative.

Sometimes no matter how comfortable you are with one another, it can simply feel impossible to find the ‘right’ words. And that’s the key - often the fear of saying the wrong thing is what takes over.

It’s important for both of you to acknowledge how these kinds of interactions make you feel.

And it can really help to establish some helpful strategies in anticipation of this.

Pausing and simply saying ‘I’m struggling to know how to respond’

“I’m wondering how you’d like me to support you right now”

“Sometimes I struggle to find the words and I might go silent; please know this isn’t because I don’t care”

I don’t know if this is for you or for me or for all of us…but that’s what I felt I needed to write today.

It has been a week 😓

And it’s tempting to keep ploughing through like a bulldozer but this weekend feels special. We have 2 Birthdays in the house…(well one next week) but 16 feels like a big one here.

Every part of me wanted to plan a gathering or do something momentous, but my Scorpio boy is chilled. And really - it’s his Birthday, it needs to be his rules.

I’m remembering the 29 year old me - bursting at the seams (in more ways than one) this time 16 years ago. I was so filled with excitement and curiosity about who this little person was going to be and my body was quite literally expanding with love every second.

This year I don’t want to bounce through the weekend checking off to do lists - I want to remember it all.

I want to exhale and reflect and take it all in. I will breathe in some of his scorpio chilledness ❤️

So this is my advice to you - be brave and pause.

Exhale; let the week melt away.

Put the to-do list down.

Make space for whatever’s here…the good, the messy and the in-between.

Here’s to soft moments, deep breaths and presence this weekend.

The thing is, sorry is only ever as useful as the understanding behind it.

Recognising both of your experiences shifts everything.

When we minimise each others feelings, you’ll stir up more conflict, not calm it.

An ‘us’ mentality can only ever exist when you see that both of you exist as separate people, with separate thoughts, feelings and experiences.

I’m not here to pi*s all over your sunshine plans, but there’s a really good reason why couples therapists get REALLY busy again in September (in my opinion).

It’s totally understandable that you might have all of your flip flops in one basket (your holiday) but if things are strained, you’re feeling disconnected, pis*ed off…a week in the sun won’t solve those problems.

Of course Sun and sangria might make things feel better for a week or 2 but wouldn’t it be so much better to set off on your hols with a spring in your step because you’re communicating better and less weighed down with your heavy back of grievances 👀

If things feel a bit off and you’re counting down the days and saying things like “it will be better when…” but not actually doing anything to pave the way - set yourself up positively.

Make some time to think about what you want the holiday to refresh?

Maybe it’s connection. Or trust. Or the ability to grow together, rather than away from each other. Maybe it’s that you’ve tried, again and again, and nothing changes enough to make it work. So you find yourself face to face with a decision that time is up. ⁣

This kind of grief feels heavy and confusing.

As a therapist, I see the pain of breakups a lot. Sometimes right before my eyes. And being on the other side of a break up isn’t easy, but it’s never easy for the person calling time either. ⁣
⁣
The heartbreak of choosing yourself when every part of you still longs for them. The shame of still loving someone who hurt you. The quiet pain of realising that “I love you” doesn’t always fix what’s broken.⁣

If this is you, I want you to know:⁣
Saying goodbye isn’t a weakness. ⁣
It’s okay to still love them. ⁣
⁣

The busyness of December can sometimes provide welcomed distractions from stuff that you might be avoiding and then January arrives like a cold wind, reminding us that life isn’t a shiny disco ball and the cracks have reappeared. ⁣

Well let me tell you, you may always have these kinds of arguments, because therapy won’t make you see stacking the dishes the same; But what it will help with is softening. ⁣
⁣
Softening to one another. ⁣
It will help you to stop making meaning around these otherwise benign actions. ⁣
It will help you recover quickly and stop the otherwise snowballing in to all of the other arguments you’ve had and it will help you to understand the much bigger drives at play.⁣

It feels like a long time since I’ve felt able to write a post. ⁣
⁣
Just ‘breathe’ has been my mantra for many months now. ⁣
⁣
It feels like the simplest and yet sometimes hardest thing to do when life is upside down. ⁣
⁣
I’ve always been a person who has held their breath; sometimes I do it when I’m concentrating, sometimes I do it when I’m sad, sometimes I do it when I’m scared. ⁣
⁣
There are many times I notice myself starting to hold my breath in the presence of a client. And it’s almost always a reflection to what is happening for them in that moment. ⁣
⁣
I guess it’s a reflection of attunement, where I’m tuned into their state. But as breathing is an integral part of wellbeing, it’s my job to voice this. So being able to acknowledge it, normalise it and then co-regulate through our breathing is really important. ⁣
⁣
The last few months have shown me how many people I have in my corner who are prepared to just breathe alongside me. Being with someone who can sit alongside you and remind you to breathe when it’s not coming naturally is an act of care ⁣
⁣
Today I’ve held my breath a lot. ⁣
⁣
At times with clients; in the playground; the bathroom alone. ⁣But a gentle reminder is always helpful.
⁣
It’s hard to show up in these squares when showing up anywhere is a challenge. ⁣
⁣
But in the spirit of honesty - I wanted to remind you that taking a breath can feel like the simplest of things, but can easily forgotten when we’re struggling. ⁣
⁣
I decided that at 44 1/2 years old it was time to get a permanent reminder 😂⁣
⁣
You don’t need a tattoo, but it won’t do you any harm to check in with how intentional your breathing is 😉⁣

I have no idea how one minute I was putting away the Christmas 🎄 decs and now I’m thinking about getting them back out. It feels like this year I’ve blinked! ⁣

As a mum of 3, I completely get the temptation to abandon all the things that bring you peace, well-being and care when the Christmas wishes start to come in hard and fast.⁣

It’s tempting to let things go in lieu of Christmas. It’s a busy time and it’s easy to justify skipping sessions and even picking back up in the new year. ⁣

But…I know enough about family dynamics, couples stressors and individual struggles to say that by denying those needs now, you can end up in a much trickier position. ⁣

It’s that time of year again 👀⁣
⁣
I have no idea how one minute I was putting away the Christmas 🎄 decs and now I’m thinking about getting them back out. It feels like this year I’ve blinked! ⁣
⁣
As a mum of 3, I completely get the temptation to abandon all the things that bring you peace, well-being and care when the Christmas wishes start to come in hard and fast.⁣
⁣
It’s tempting to let things go in lieu of Christmas. It’s a busy time and it’s easy to justify skipping sessions and even picking back up in the new year. ⁣
⁣
But…I know enough about family dynamics, couples stressors and individual struggles to say that by denying those needs now, you can end up in a much trickier position. ⁣
⁣

I knew that inevitably by the end of this 6 weeks I would probably be swearing under my breath a lot, desperate for just one moment alone and counting the days until school begins. ⁣
⁣
But of course as we made our 5000th trip to the uniform shop yesterday and step closer to the start, I started to feel weary. Less desperate for the coming days of new starts and a big dollop of guilt settling into the pit of my stomach. ⁣
⁣
Why did we not do more? Where has 5 years gone? How will I cope with another child at secondary school and one more starting? ⁣
Why don’t I know what the equivalent numbers are to grades for GCSEs? Why am I always crawling to the finish line whilst others seem to skip? ⁣Will they be happy?
⁣
These are just handful of questions that took over yesterday. ⁣
⁣
And I know that as September sessions resume, many of these feelings will arrive with my clients. There are countless moments that I sit with a mother whilst she weeps; sharing her feelings of inadequacy and fear. So much comparison swimming around - believing that everyone else must have it all worked out as she stands on the periphery of the playground. ⁣
⁣
But really - none of us do. We might find glimmers of feeling like we’ve nailed it and this will likely be followed with more questions, worries, uncertainty. ⁣
⁣
As I climbed into bed last night I reminded myself of what I regularly ask my clients to do. Find that kinder, softer more gentle voice you use with others. What would you be saying to your friend if she felt this way? ⁣
⁣
If you’re skipping into school this week and feel nothing but relief - it’s okay. ⁣
⁣
If you’re flooded with regret and sadness - it’s okay. ⁣
⁣
If you feel a mix of relief and trepidation- it’s okay. ⁣
⁣
If like me, you haven’t yet figured out how to navigate these years - it’s okay. ⁣
⁣
And if you can find a glimmer - let it wash over you. ⁣

Summer hols are upon me and I’m not finding time or space to share much. ⁣
⁣
But I’ve been thinking about endings a lot and recently had to say goodbye to a couple who also were saying goodbye to each other. ⁣
⁣
It’s never easy. ⁣
⁣
It’s not often that many people witness the end of someone else’s relationship in close proximity. ⁣
⁣
I sometimes wonder if I could have done more to support them. Or if a little more time would help. But it’s never my job to determine the timings of this or how far people go. I can only offer up my support in the process. ⁣
⁣
I’m still always working on my feelings about endings. It probably will never not be something I have to keep an eye on. ⁣

The purpose of therapy isn’t to keep going forever. But it is to enable you to have an understanding of your own feelings, responses and the strategies you’ve often created that can be problematic in your adult relationships; this enables more ease in your relationship and improves communication. ⁣

However, it is a process that takes time. And having continuity and accountability is important for sustainable changes. ⁣
⁣
It’s not always easy to keep up sessions when summer arrives and other responsibilities take over, but I would encourage you to keep doing the work you’ve started. ⁣
⁣
This can also look like regular daily check ins with each other; planning a bit of time alone. ⁣
Or if you’re time poor - lots of couples book in an extended session to keep things going but less often than their regular slot. ⁣

I know we’ve hardly seen the sun this ‘summer’ but lots of you will be jetting off on your summer hols soon or if you have children - the looming 6(ish) weeks off. ⁣
⁣
After many years of doing this - the trend is fairly clear - therapy goes on the backburner. Of course it makes sense for all kinds of reasons - time, finance, childcare - and the hopeful assumption that all will be well after that break to the sunshine. ⁣
⁣
For some - the break will remedy plenty. ⁣
⁣
But for others’ that big break may have you slip sliding into familiar patterns or feelings that you’ve been working hard to move through. ⁣
⁣
Whatever camp you’re in - it will be okay. But honestly if you have the time, space, resources to maintain your therapy - I would. ⁣
⁣
Having space for you alone or with your partner doesn’t stop being important because you’re jetting off somewhere. The pressures of school hols are real; sometimes just having some moments booked in to exhale can be reassuring and an opportunity to check in with yourself.

Keep yourself at the top - what goes on up there filters down.

I know we’ve hardly seen the sun this ‘summer’ but lots of you will be jetting off on your summer hols soon or if you have children - the looming 6(ish) weeks off. ⁣
⁣
After many years of doing this - the trend is fairly clear - therapy goes on the backburner. Of course it makes sense for all kinds of reasons - time, finance, childcare - and the hopeful assumption that all will be well after that break to the sunshine. ⁣
⁣
For some - the break will remedy plenty. ⁣
⁣
But for others’ that big break may have you slip sliding into familiar patterns or feelings that you’ve been working hard to move through. ⁣
⁣
Whatever camp you’re in - it will be okay. But honestly if you have the time, space, resources to maintain your therapy - I would. ⁣
⁣
Having space for you alone or with your partner doesn’t stop being important because you’re jetting off somewhere. The pressures of school hols are real; sometimes just having some moments booked in to exhale can be reassuring and an opportunity to check in with yourself.

Keep yourself at the top - what goes on up there filters down.

But sometimes for all of the will in the world, every interaction can feel like nails down a blackboard and you can’t even see why. ⁣

And it’s easy to get caught up in a negative cycle but believe it or not, with a bit of intention, insight and care - you can just as easily get back in to a positive one. ⁣

One of the hardest things is tackling a tricky topic when actually it feels like you’re getting along okay. This is even harder if you’ve had a lot of tension because those calmer moments are few and far between. ⁣

But, by keeping the peace - how much are you abandoning yourself? ⁣
Your needs? ⁣
Your dreams? ⁣
Your values? ⁣
⁣
By not bringing your worries or concerns to the table, you’re depriving the other person from being able to work things out with you. ⁣
⁣
It’s not good or kind because you’re telling yourself you’re protecting your partner by not rocking the boat, even though it completely makes sense that you feel this way. ⁣
⁣
Talking about hard things is a muscle that needs to be flexed. ⁣Every one of us has to keep practicing. ⁣
⁣
Some people will go in like a bull in a China shop - combative and ready for battle, this isn’t ideal either. ⁣

But sitting on your feelings is not going to move you any closer to the type of intimacy that means you can work through things quicker and with less of a long lasting negative impact.⁣

And I can’t tell you how much joy it brings to me when my clients seek out the help they need to work on these skills and start shouting it from the roof tops. ⁣

It’s like a second guess my thoughts - or more how they will be perceived and received. ⁣

I’m not sure if this is because I’m out of the habit of sharing or if it feels weird to come and post here with all the atrocities occurring all over. ⁣

Anyway - I felt compelled to write this! ⁣
I feel like we’re so often romanced by the number of years people stay in coupledom; like it’s the gold seal of success. ⁣
⁣
I often catch myself saying “ooohhhh” when a couple tell me they’ve been together for 20 years. And yet I know so well that this doesn’t mean anything in terms of happiness or satisfaction unless there’s actually both of those things. ⁣
⁣
We can get so familiar with another that we become unfamiliar with curiosity; ⁣
⁣
It’s absolutely possible to remedy all of the things I name in my slides - but what will absolutely not do that is clinging to longevity like a life raft. ⁣
⁣
Get curious; be open to change; reignite that unknowing. ⁣
⁣

Overwhelm, familiarity, fear - so many things can stop us from starting to do things to change. Not to mention systemic factors that influence what is possible. ⁣

What I would say is sometimes a little change can go a long way. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine what it would even feel like for one small element to change. ⁣

My experience tells me that even the first appointment in therapy can give enough of a glimmer of hope to create impact.⁣

If you’re feeling overwhelmed - making space to really consider what is possible is very powerful. ⁣

Sometimes the deterioration is loud and obvious and sometimes it’s quiet and unclear. ⁣
⁣
A crossroads, misaligned values or maybe something mysterious can be the catalyst for change. ⁣
⁣
Whatever and however, there will always be a part of you that simply didn’t believe the end would come. ⁣
⁣
Shock is a natural part of grief. ⁣
Despair is a common part of a relationship break down.⁣
Anger will arrive and may well be the only momentum you feel when you’re at your very lowest point. ⁣
⁣
In the same way it takes time to arrive at this place, it will take time to move somewhere else. ⁣
⁣
Whether that’s rebuilding your relationship or moving in to the next stage alone. ⁣
⁣
Sometimes things don’t make sense. That’s the hardest part. Making sense of something⁣
that feels senseless. ⁣

Use your energy to soothe. ⁣

💫Decide what your goal is and find a therapist who specialises in that area. Some of the goals will be broader than others.
But for example a therapist who works with couples isn’t necessarily a couples therapist. This is a big difference.

💫Recommendations can be good.

💫Searching the Counselling Directory here in the U.K. is a user friendly site.

💫Do you want in person or online? My experience is that people sometimes reject the idea of online therapy but there are lots of benefits.

💫Cost - it’s a time and financial commitment - what can you afford?

💫 Try a few out; some do initial freebies (I don’t because I feel like there’s value in even just one session).

💫And sometimes you simply have to like the look of someone. I know that might sound silly or ill informed but if you choose someone who reminds you of your old history teacher that told you off every week - it probs won’t feel like a fit.

You are not entitled to just keep having the relationship you’re in, even when you’re committed and you’ve said it’s forever. ⁣

Don’t confuse this for not being entitled to a relationship full stop; but if somewhere deep down you believe that you’re just entitled to your relationship just because - you’re not. ⁣
⁣
They take continuous re-evaluation and willingness to make changes. ⁣
⁣
Things will change. Life will happen. You will change - therefore your relationship won’t be able to operate happily if there’s no acknowledgment and belief that it will change too. ⁣
⁣
I hear people say they know that things change in relationships all of the time, but I also know that they don’t wholly believe it. ⁣
There’s a part of them that is holding on to the idea that because they’re committed and in it for the long haul that it shouldn’t change that much. ⁣

It’s to be expected that complacency will set it in, but let’s normalise re-evaluating and checking in; ⁣

What did I once believe about this relationship that has actually changed? ⁣

What parts feel nourishing and what parts do not? ⁣

How much willingness do I bring to the day to day challenges we face? ⁣
